Professor Paul Bender was quoted recently in an article in the State Press headlined "Goddard, Sinema accused of not 'resigning to run.' "

The Sept. 8 article by reporter Derek Quizon discussed Republican Party Chairman Randy Pullen's claim that State Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Phoenix, and Attorney General Terry Goddard, both alumni of the College of Law, broke a voter-approved state law that prohibits elected officials from announcing their candidacy for one office while serving in another.

Bender, who teaches Arizona Constitutional law, said a "formal declaration of candidacy" would include announcements of campaign fundraising and the hiring of a campaign staff, which neither Goddard nor Sinema did.

Bender added that Pullen's accusations are nothing more than a political game.

"He's doing this to divert attention from other things, or he's doing it to be a nuisance to the Democrats," Bender said.
