| Paul Bender | Professor Paul Bender was quoted in a story in the Sept. 15 edition of The Arizona Republic about lawsuits that were filed by abortion-rights supporters asking state and federal judges to block new Arizona laws that would restrict abortion access.
In one of the lawsuits, Planned Parenthood alleges that the laws impose an undue burden on women seeking abortions, in violation of a section of the Arizona Constitution that protects their rights to privacy, according to an article by reporter Casey Newton. The Arizona Supreme Court has never ruled on whether the right to privacy extends to abortion rights.
"It's an open question," said Bender, noting that the Arizona Constitution provides broader rights than the U.S. Constitution in some cases and could leave abortion laws vulnerable to challenge if judges determine that right does extend to abortion.
