Ian J. Pryor passed away February 18, 2008.  Ian was born and raised in Mesa, attended Dobson High School, then graduated from the University of Arizona School of Business and Public Administration in 2000.  He will be remembered as a smart, capable and passionate professional, as a caring son and brother, and as a kind and generous friend.

Ellen Rebecca Starkeson, 32, died suddenly in Williams, Arizona, on April 17, 2005.  She was born on January 18, 1973, in Derry, New Hampshire.  Ellen graduated from Bradeis University with a bachelor's degree, cum laude, in sociology, in 1995, and from ASU College of Law with a J.D., cum laude, in 2000.  She immediately went to work as an attorney for the law firm of Stinson Morrison Hecker, LLP, and thereafter, joined the Maricopa County Attorney's Office as a deputy county prosecutor in November 2003, Ellen was a board member of the Homeless Legal Assistance Project, with which she had been involved since law school.

John Roland Woodring, a native Phoenician, passed away November 14, 2008 at the age of 41. John attended ASU as an undergraduate, then went on to complete his J.D., with pro bono distinction, at the College of Law. John is survived by his wife of 20 years, Cheryl, his parents, Roland and Cynthia, a brother, Jeff, a niece, Destinee, and a nephew, Dustin. Although John suffered from cystic fibrosis, he was a sportsman, and enjoyed hunting and motorcycle riding. He always tried to live each day to the fullest and encouraged others to test their own limits.

Carrie Lynn Voegtli , 44, passed away November 28, 2008 at her home in Peoria, Ariz. Carrie grew up in St. Louis, Mo. where she graduated from Brentwood High School. Carrie, her husband and her family eventually moved to the Phoenix area. Carrie attended ASU as an undergraduate and then the College of Law, where in 1999 she was awarded a J.D. In 2000, Carrie was honored by the Volunteer Lawyers Program as the young lawyer children's advocate of the year. In her final years Carrie opened her own practice in Prescott, Ariz., and dedicated her career to representation of those involved in the dependency and deliquency system in Yavapai County.

Frederick (Fritz) M. Fliegel passed away of cancer March 20, 2009 in Spokane, Wash. He was practicing law as a contract attorney at Ivey Smith and Ramirez in Spokane at the time of his death. Prior to that, he had worked for both Lee & Hayes and Wells St. John, intellectual property-focused law firms, also in Spokane.

Jonathan Paul "Jamie" Schubert, 41, passed away suddenly December 23, 2006, while visiting his family in southern California. He received his bachelor's in economics in 1987 from the University of California, San Diego, and later went on to attend ASU where he was awarded a joint JD and MBA degree in 1993 from the College of Law. He opened his own law practice in 1996 and specialized in probate, guardianship and conservatorship, elder law, mental health law, civil litigation and juvenile law.  He was a member of the Arizona Trial Lawyers Association, served as a judge pro tem in the Probate/Mental Health Department of the Maricopa County Superior Court.

Carl "Chip" Wortley III  passed away July 13, 2007.  Prior to his passing he practiced at Cavanagh Law Firm.

Carole Larsen-Harper, 59, died on July 4, 2007 in Arizona of a disabling illness.  She grew up in Nevada, California and Utah, but had lived in Arizona since 1982.  Carole's bachelor's degree in psychology was awarded by Utah State University in 1975 and she graduated at the top of her class at ASU's College of Law in 1990 at the age of 42.  She had worked as a paralegal at Lewis and Roca during the 1980's, then after receiving her JD, served as an attorney in the Maricopa County Public Defender's office.  She was involved in a national effort to reform methadone laws and remained an independent spirit to the end.

Mark Gregory Setlow, 51, of Gilbert, Arizona passed away on October 27, 2007. Greg was born in Alameda, California and grew up in that area as well as in Utah, Hawaii and Mesa.  He graduated from Westwood High School then served an LDS Mission to New York City from 1975-1977.  In 1978 he and Becky Alder were married at the Mesa Temple.  He then attended Mesa Community college, then transferred to Brigham Young University where he received his BA in 1985.  He continued with his education at the College of Law and received his JD in 1988.  He was most recently employed as a defense attorney for Pinal County, Az. Greg had a great compassion for those who were less fortunate and was fun-loving, witty, articulate and an avid sports fan.  He will be greatly missed.

Mary Lou Bolton, 42, died unexpectedly March 18, 2002 in Phoenix, Arizona, where she lived with her husband, Gerald Hartill. Mary Lou received her B.A. degree in Political Science from Wright State University in 1982 and her J.D. in 1987 from ASU College of Law. She was employed for 12 years as an assistant attorney general for the State of Arizona.

Shelley (Todd) Davis , 49, of Phoenix, was killed on August 30, 2008 while training to run in the upcoming San Francisco marathon, her 9th. Shelley received her undergraduate degree in government from Smith College in 1982 and was awarded her J.D. from the College of Law in 1986.  Beginning in 1987 she served as an attorney in the Maricopa County Public Defender's office and continued to defend the public until her death. She loved to read, craft jewelry, was an accomplished cook and seamstress, and later in life, competed in marathons and triathalons. All who knew her appreciated her tenaciousness, creativity and generosity.

Gerald T. Hickman, 50,  was killed in a bicycle accident on Dec. 20, 2008.  Gerry was born January 11, 1958 in Salt Lake City, Utah, graduated from Provo High School in 1976, and received his undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University, then went on to earn his J.D., cum laude, from the College of Law in 1985.  He began his legal career at Teilborg, Sanders, and Parks, (now Sanders & Parks, P.C.) of Phoenix, AZ, and was a founder and partner at Jardine, Baker, Hickman & Houston, P.L.L.C., also of Phoenix.  He was an active member of the LDS church, serving as Young Mens' President, Ward Mission Leader, Bishop's Counselor and High Counselor.  Gerry's hobbies included cycling, reading, wakeboarding and other sports.  He is survived by his wife Jana, four children, one grandchild, and many other family members and associates who loved and respected him.

Stephen Guy Smyth, 55, of Tempe, died on Sept. 5, 2007. Steve was a graduate of the University of Colorado, a founding partner of Schmitt, Schneck, Smyth & Herrod in Phoenix, a gifted Bible teacher, voracious reader and lively conversationalist. He was known for his rock-solid faith, integrity, wisdom, quick wit, tireless patience, and dedication to his family.

I. Marshall Gan, a 1982 graduate of the College of Law, died on Wednesday, July 30, 2008, due to complications related to end-stage liver disease. The Phoenix native was valedictorian of the Class of 1974 at Phoenix Central High and a graduate of Stanford University. Gan was a member of the Arizona State Law Journal   in 1979-80. He performed two judicial clerkships following his graduation from law school and worked for many years in private practice for several Phoenix bankruptcy/litigation firms. Later in life, he also was a law clerk and attorney in Tucson.

John Manuel Gaylord, 50, died in a motorcycle accident on April 6, 2007.  John was travelling north, south of Florence, on Arizona state Highway 79 when the driver of an SUV veered off of the roadway, then overcorrected, causing the boat he was towing to cross over into the northbound lane hitting Gaylord.  John most recently served as a Maricopa County Superior Court Judge and had served as a Chandler juvenile court judge.  He loved the opportunity his service to the community gave him to change young people's lives.  He had also served as a former assistant state attorney general, and in 1992 had run against Richard Kyle for the District 6 Republican House seat, losing to him after they agreed to play a poker game to decide their tie in the primary.  His bachelor's degree had been awarded to him from Northern Arizona University.

David T. Smith , 51, died June 16, 2007. He had managed Firebird Stadium in Scottsdale for several years and worked for Safeway Corporation for 22 years.

Diane Lindstrom McClure died Sept. 2 after a battle with cancer. She was 66, and had been a member of the defense team in the famous Steven Steinberg case, in which the Scottsdale man was found temporarily insane when he stabbed his wife 26 times. Read her obituary here .

Paul D. Cruikshank passed away on August 15, 2006 after a valiant fight with cancer.  Paul spent much of his career providing legal and legislative support as the General Counsel of the Arizona Credit League.  He was a member of the Maricopa and American Bar Associations, served on a number of Credit Union National Association committees, and locally on the Board of Directors of the Volunteer Center of Maricopa County, and from 1999 - 2001, was its President.  He is survived by his wife Cathy, his sister Lori, brother-in-law Randy and niece Kaitlin Rogers.  Paul Cruikshank Memorial Funds have been arranged through the University Medical Center in Tucson, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Arts, and ARTLINK, the Local Phoenix grassroots Arts organization.

Maureen (Gavalek) Goodwin passed away on November, 29, 2007.  She was 55.  A retired corporate attorney, Ms. Goodwin is survived by her husband, John, and their children, McKenzie and Brendan.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in honor of Maureen be made to Brophy College Preparatory, 4701 N. Central Ave., Phoenix, Ariz., 85012.

Patricia (Robles) Nelson passed away January 9, 2006.

Sharon Ann O'Brien-Reyes, 57, of Mesa, AZ died September 25, 2001.  Sharon practiced family law for 20 years.  She was once chosen Woman of the Year in Maricopa County and won national recognition. She is survived by her husband, Adrian, daughter LaReina Marian Delos Reyes, and son, Rodrigo Adrian Delos Reyes.

Patrick Neal Wallendorf, 55, died Sunday, May 2, 1999 in Fredericksburg, Texas.  Survivors include his wife, Carrie Cockrell Wallendorf, a daughter, Syndey Wallendorf, his parents, Reuben and Alice Wallendorf and a brother, Steven Wallendorf, all of Fredericksberg.

Michael J. "Mike" Brophy passed away September 18, 2006.  Michael was the managing shareholder of the firm of Ryley Carlock & Applewhite in Phoenix, AZ, and had been with the firm since 1977 where he practiced extensively in the fields of natural resources and water law.  He also served as chairman of the Western States Water Council.

Kevin T. Tehan was born in Hempstead, New York, but resided in Scottsdale, AZ for 35 years before his death on September 29, 2000 at the age of 48. Kevin was a partner in the law firm of Sparks, Tehan and Ryley, P.C.

Gary C. Brown passed away July 19, 2005.

Phillip W. Glenn died of a heart attack February 27, 2002.  Phillip was born in Taxas.  He served four years in the Navy and in 1969 married Christine Nelson.  After graudating from law school he established a practice in Casa Grande in 1976.  During the early 1980's he was founding partner of Metasoft, a software development company.  He later returned to practice law in the firm Howard & Glenn, which is now Glenn & Elliott.  He was very proud of his restaurant, Cafe de Manuel.  Community involvement included: Jaycees, with which he helped orchestrate hot-air balloon races in the late 1970's to raise funds for charities; St. Vincent de Paul Society; Greater Casa Grande Chamber of Commerce; Greater Casa Grande Valley Economic Development Foundation; Sun Life Family Health Center board; Casa Grande Rotary Club; and varioius political campaigns.   He is survived by his wife, Christine and his son Sarge Glenn.

Socorro "Soc" L. Morales passed away unexpectedly on December 16, 2006. Soc was born in Santo Tomas, New Mexico and grew up in Queen Creek, Arizona, then enlisted in the U.S. Army for four years. After serving his country, he attended Mesa Community College, then ASU, where he completed a bachelor's in education and law degree. He went on to practice law in Chandler, AZ and was active in the Lions Club and Los Abogados.  He served as a Pro Tem Judge in Chandler City Court and also served as a counsel for the Arizona State Senate.  He was also involved in various charities.

John S. Goff passed away on April 8, 2001. He was the author of more than a dozen books in the fields of Arizona history and the Abraham Lincoln family. A member of the State Bar of Arizona, the Arizona Academy, and a director of the Arizona Historical Foundation and the Central Arizona Chapter of the Arizona Historical Society, Mr. Goff served as a consultant to the National Humanities Foundation, and for more than twenty years was a consultant-examiner for the North Central Association.

Claudine Bates-Arthur, Navajo Nation Supreme Court Chief Justice, 62, passed away on November 27, 2004, at her home in St. Michaels.  Chief Justice Bates-Arthur was the first female chief justice on the tribe's high court, and was the third chief justice in the court's 19-year history; she was appointed in 2003.  She had served as the tribe's attorney general from 1983-1987 and was the chief legislative counsel from 1989-1995.

John Mickel Echeverria, 54, of Phoenix, passed away in his home on December 19, 2001. A successful businessman, entrepreneur and pioneer in software development, Mikel founded QCSI, a software engineering firm, in 1994, where he served as the executive vice president & chairman of the board.  Between 1978 and 1993, Mikel also served on the Casa Grande Regional Medical Center Board of Directors.

Arthur M. McBrayer passed away October 3, 2006.

Michael D. Tidwell was born in Phoenix, AZ.  For 21 years he lived and practiced law in Apache Junction, AZ.  After retiring, Michael spent his summers in the lake area near Warsaw, MO where he died on November 18, 2000 at the age of 58.

Robert William Kuebler, Jr., 53, died in an automobile accident July 2, 2001, while on vacation in Montana. Kuebler was Prescott Justice of the Peace, Yavapai County Justice Courts. He is survived by his wife, Miriam, and children, Robert William Kuebler, III, Kerri Kuebler, Holly Kuebler, Kevin Lewis, and Heather Tippit. The family has established The Judge Robert William Kuebler, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund at Yavapai College. 

George M. Sterling, Jr., 58, passed away on May 28, 2005. George (Duke), a Phoenix native, was born to the Honorable George and Ruby Sterling on March 24, 1947.  He attended Central High SChool, followed by ASU where he affiliated with Phi Delta Theta and Blue Key.  He then attended ASU College of Law where he was a founding member of Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity.  George practiced law for 32 years.  He loved the law and truly enjoyed being a solo practitioner.  He was a certified criminal specialist, and for the past few years, also practiced in Gila County.  George is survived by his wife of 32 years, Anne, his son, Mathieson Sterling, daughter, Allison Sterling Henward (Tim) and sisters, Karen Sterling and the Honorable Janis Ann Sterling.

Mary Alice Bass, 73, of Scottsdale AZ, attorney retired, died October 4, 2001, after an extended battle with cancer.  A member of the founding class at ASU College of Law, Ms. Bass served as a felony prosecutor in the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, chief referee of the Maricopa County Juvenile Court, and as the first chairman of the Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board.

William C. Blakley was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1946, but moved to Arizona at a young age and attended grade school and high school here. He earned his B.A. degree from the UA in 1968 and his law degree from the ASU College of Law in 1971.  After a short time working at the public defender's office in Phoenix, Mr. Blakley went to work for Mohr, Hackett, Pederson, Blakley, Randolph & Haga, P.C., where he practiced until his untimely death in a commercial plane crash in 1987.  The ASU Ross-Blakley Law Library is named in memory of William C. Blakley and John J. Ross.

Lawrence Jack Evans, Jr., 79, passed away March 20, 2001.  Larry served his country in the armed forces, initially in the Navy prior to World War II, and then in the Army from 1942 to 1968, where he rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel. After his retirement in 1968, Larry moved to Tempe and earned his law degree. He served as an attorney and as an administrative law judge for the State of Arizona and was named Outstanding Administrative Law Judge for State Service in the United States in 1974. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marjorie, and sons Richard and Donald, daughters Daryl Kleweno and Shirley Coursey, and nine grandchildren.

Kevin M. Kane died of Hodgkin's lymphoma, January 9, 1999. Mr. Kane's family and the College of Law Alumni Association have established the Kane Family Memorial Book Scholarship in his memory.

Joseph "Jay" A. Tvedt Jr. died of brain cancer, March 30, 2009, in Hospice in Phoenix, Ariz. Jay received his BA in chemistry from ASU in 1968 and earned his Juris Doctor from the College of Law in 1971. He maintained a private law practice until 1994 while also serving as a reserve patrolman for the Arizona Department of Public Safety, an administrative law judge for the Arizona Department of Economic Security, assistant city prosecutor in Phoenix, and judge pro tem on the Phoenix Municipal Court. In his later years Jay gave up practicing law and began working as a travel counselor for American Express, winning numerous awards and commendations.

John S. Lancy, 56, died October 26, 2001 in San Francisco, CA, after a protracted battle against brain cancer.  Mr. Lancy received his B.A. and M.A. in accounting from ASU and was a member of the ASU College of Law charter law school class in 1967, graduating magna cum laude in 1970. He was the first editor-in-chief of the Arizona State University Law Journal.  Mr. Lancy clerked for Judge James M. Carter in the Ninth Circuit before joining the Phoenix law firm of Streich, Lang, Weeks, Cardon and French. Five years later, he left that firm to establish he own solo practice in real estate and corporate law, securities, and partnerships. For three years he was vice chairman and outside general counsel of Western Pacific Airlines. In 1998, he returned in an of-counsel capacity to Quarles & Brady Streich Lang, where he remained until his illness.  John Lancy is survived by his wife, Roxanne, and his children, Jenica Lancy and Justin Lancy.

Daniel F. Norton, Jr., 81, died May 9, 2001, at his home in Paradise Valley.  He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Toms Norton, and his children, Daniel F. Norton, III, Jacqueline Norton and Suzanne Norton, all of Phoenix; Wendy Reynolds of Solvang, CA, and eleven grandchildren.

John J. Relihan Jr. passed away June 20, 2007.

Warren Siegal, 58, died July 5, 2001.  Warren received his B.S. from Arizona State College (NAU) in 1965.  He was a rodeo cowboy for two years before entering ASU College of Law.  After law school, he continued to rodeo until he started his law practice in 1973.  He later became involved in the breeding and racing of thoroughbred horses. Warren is survived by his wife, Alexandra, and his three sons, Morgan, Wyatt and Brett.
