Things to Do: Architectural Interests

While it may not boast buildings back to the days that our country was formed, Arizona, and particularly the Phoenix metro area, does offer some interesting architecture, some of it right here on the campus of ASU.

At ASU:

  • Old Main - Dating back to 1893, when ASU was still called the Tempe Normal School, Old Main became the home of the college. Old Main has seen a lot of history over the years, including an address from the balcony by President Teddy Roosevelt, the change from Tempe Normal School to Arizona College, and then to Arizona State University. Inside you'll find wonderful and large works of art.
  • Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium - Designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the auditorium features soaring arches and a near-perfect acoustic experience. It is located at the corner of Mill Avenue and Apache Boulevard and serves as a gateway to the university.
  • Lattie Coor Hall - This unique classroom, research and computer lab, and office building demonstrates a unique crossroads of art and architecture. Letters and words of different languages are etched onto the glass exterior. At certain times of the day, the word "EXPLORE" is displayed in shadow on one side of the building. It is considered ASU's largest art display.
  • Ross-Blakley Law Library - The Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law's Ross-Blakley Law Library is one of the most outstanding and unique buildings on the ASU campus.  Be sure to stop by for a tour.
  • Nelson Fine Arts Center - The center is home to the Galvin Playhouse and the ASU Art Museum and features interesting exteriors and interiors.
  • College of Design - The College of Design is housed in two connected buildings, each with its own intriguing architecture.  Student exhibitions and expert lectures occur regularly (see event calendar ).

In the Phoenix Metro Area:

Outside the Phoenix Metro Area:

  • Arcosanti - created by architect and artist Paolo Soleri as an experimental urban development aiming to improve urban life while minimizing the damage on the environment.
