Services for Current Students

Career Services is a good place to begin to figure out what type of legal, quasi-legal or alternative jobs interest you and to begin a search for clerkships and permanent positions. While we cannot guarantee employment, Career Services does make every effort to locate job opportunities. The secret to getting a job is you: your initiative, your effort, your creativity, your enthusiasm. The qualities that help you locate and then land the job are the same qualities employers seek. Employers hire the most qualified, but they also look for people they want to work with and enjoy being around.

Recruitment Program
Every year in the fall and spring prospective employers recruit for jobs that begin the following summer or after the bar exam.  Students must register to participate in the Fall or Spring Recruitment Program through the Symplicity CSM system.  Students can then access a schedule of visiting and non-visiting employers, submit requested materials to employers of interest, and sign up for interviews on-line if selected by an employer.

Career Counseling
Individual appointments are available with Career Services advisors to assist students in determining the type of legal career that is right for you and to review application materials. Appointments should be scheduled through the Career Services Office, 480-965-5808.

Symplicity CSM
Symplicity CSM is a web-based registration system for accessing Career Service's Fall and Spring Recruitment Programs and job-search resources. Students register by building their own profile and uploading their resume. This information is made available to employers in a searchable format.  Through Symplicity CSM, students can also: conduct legal employer research on-line, bid for interviews, send resumes on-line to legal employers, sign up for interviews, communicate with law school and legal employers on-line, reach off-campus recruiting legal employers through the job posting database, and be accessible to subscribing employers nationwide who do not come to campus.

Job Postings
Attorney positions are posted through Symplicity CSM system. This site is password protected.  ASU students and alumni may secure the password through the Career Services Office.  Fellowship opportunities are also posted at this site.  A copy of all listings are filed in the Career Services Office.

Application Materials Workshops: Resume, Cover Letters and Interviews
Workshops are offered each fall and spring on the preparation of resumes, cover letters and interviewing skills.  Appointments are also available for individual assistance.  Students are encouraged to attend the workshops prior to requesting individual appointments.  Rough drafts of your resume and cover letter should be made available to the Career Services staff member prior to your appointment.

Programs, Workshops, Seminars
Throughout the academic year, Career Services offers numerous workshops, panel discussions and information sessions on a variety of issues.  Sessions involve members of the legal and non-legal community on various areas of practice.

Resource Library
The Resource Library in Career Services provides for student use numerous reference books and also information on specific law firms, directories in particular subject areas and for major Western cities, pamphlets and handouts on resume preparation, interviewing skills, and judicial clerkship information.  The library also provides directories and descriptive information regarding all accredited LL.M. (Masters of Law) and study abroad programs.

Career Fairs
Career Services assists students in identifying and registering for specialized career fairs around the country.  These fairs are targeted to public-service work, specialized practice areas, and minority students.

Reciprocity
Reciprocity is a courtesy arrangement among different law school Career Services Offices. The agreement allows students and graduates use of the Career Service Office of law schools located in other cities.  Each law school has its own requirements for this use.  Some only allow graduates to use their services and some are open to students.  A student is required to have a letter of introduction from ASU before visiting or contacting another law school's Career Service Office.  If you are planning a visit to another school and would like a letter of reciprocity, please stop by Carolyn Landry's office in Student Services, Room 101, Armstrong Hall.

Jobs in Indian Law
Jobs in Indian Law is the only publication of its kind devoted entirely to Native American employment opportunities in Indian law and with Native American tribes throughout the country.

Computers
One computer is available for student use in Career Services.  The computer is dedicated for Westlaw and Lexis usage and may be used for job searches.  The computer may not be used for class projects.
