North American Law Degree

Why the North American Law Degree?

In an increasingly interdependent world, the need for lawyers with expertise in Canadian and U.S. Law is a business and legal necessity for the 21st Century.  We at ASU are addressing this need by offering a North American Law Degree - granted within three years - that prepares graduates to seek admission to the bar in both the U.S. and Canada.  The North American Law Degree not only provides solutions for tomorrow's lawyers, it solves current needs for law students in both countries.
  • The “North American Law Degree” will prepare graduates, within three years, to seek bar admission in both the U.S. and Canada without further coursework.
  • Students receive a world-class education that provides substantive knowledge of both U.S. and Canadian law.
  • The J.D. program will connect graduates to Canadian businesses and law firms and has been endorsed by the Canada Arizona Business Council.
  • The North American Law Degree will provide ASU law graduates greater opportunities for international law practice.
  • Due to recent action by the Arizona Supreme Court, 3Ls will have the opportunity to take the Arizona bar exam in their last semester, and focus on the licensure process in Canada immediately after graduation.
  • Participants receive their education at a law school ranked #8 among public law schools in the U.S. and #26 among all U.S. law schools.
  • Tuition at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law is lower than that at any Top 25 U.S. law school.

"ASU is showing a leadership role in creating this program, as there remains a lack of lawyers experienced in handling cross-border deals.  As deal flow among small- to medium-sized businesses increases between the U.S. and Canada, more options are needed for handling cross-border legal issues than just the few trained specialists in big firms."

- R. Glenn Williamson, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of the Canada Arizona Business Council
