In July 2004 Arizona State University and the ASU College of Law joined forces to launch an exciting new forum for legal education, the “ASU Center for Law Leadership & Management.” The ASU Center’s mission is to provide top-flight educational programs for attorneys and business professionals. The collaboration is part of the overall transformation of ASU to a world-class university. In the words of President Michael Crow “The measure of success of ASU will be not only the quality of education ASU students receive,” but also “the impact that the university has upon the economic, social and cultural vitality of the community.” The Center for Law Leadership & Management is strategically positioned to contribute to the dynamic growth of the University and to the local business community.
Brenda Thompson
Director Brenda Thomson points out “The ASU Center complements the other campuses, but also adds a unique educational dimension that the other campuses do not: extensive contact with the business community.” The legal profession is by its nature a service profession, and lawyers have historically provided advice and counsel in all professional arenas. The ASU Center will bring together some of the best legal and business minds in the state. The programs we offer are intended to provide business owners, managers and staff with practical hands on advice. Businesses will have ample opportunity for questions and answers beyond the traditional lecture format.
Brenda Thomson is a local attorney and former Executive Director of the Maricopa County Bar Association. She has worked extensively in both the public and private sectors, and is excited about the collaboration between ASU and the College of Law. “There are many talented faculty at the law school with broad-ranging experience in a variety of areas of law. We will also round out the faculty with leading Arizona attorneys and business professionals, including faculty from the ASU WP Carey School of Business, the Morrison Public Policy Institute, and Nonprofit Management Institute. Phoenix has experienced unprecedented growth, and recently surpassed Philadelphia as the fifth largest city in the U.S. Our local businesses face a myriad of legal, management and leadership issues which must be negotiated for them to survive and thrive. The ASU Center will be there to show them the way.
