'Should brains be private?'
Matthew Bowman, an English literature senior, recently published an opinion piece on the Web Devil Web site titled "Should brains be private?" inspired by the conference "The Law and Ethics of Brain Scanning," which was hosted by the Center for the Study of Law, Science, and Technology at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law.
The piece discusses the privacy of mental lives, free will and moral responsibility.
"How will our society reconcile morality and justice with the fact that there are observable, overwhelming thoughts and drives that makes one person's choice almost indistinguishably different from another's?" Bowman asks. "How will we respond to not only knowing the culmination of choice, but also the inner functions that were entertained or denied for that choice?"
