A federal grant that will enable the Center for the Study of Law, Science, & Technology to investigate models for regulating the growing nanotechnology field was the subject of a story in The Arizona Republic. A Sept. 22 article written by reporter Ken Alltucker and headlined, “ASU steps up to craft laws in nano world,” quoted Gary Marchant, the Center’s executive director. Marchant pointed out a study that concluded the uncertain regulatory framework surrounding nanotechnology, the science of building and manipulating things on a scale that is one-billionth of a meter, is impeding investment in the science. “There is an urgent need to find some way to do this,” Marchant told Alltucker. Marchant, along with professors Ken Abbott and Doug Sylvester, received the three-year, $314,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.
