O'Connor exhibit opens at AHS museum

The story of U.S. Supreme Court Justice (ret.) Sandra Day O'Connor will be told in an exhibition, "Sandra Day O'Connor - A Citizen for All Seasons" - which opens Thursday, Oct. 22, in the Arizona Historical Society Museum at Papago Park.

The exhibit includes artifacts, photographs, documents and video that record her youth, education, civic and legal career, and development into a national icon for women's achievement as the first female Justice on the high court. It also explores the influences on Justice O'Connor's life and pioneering spirit that allowed her to become the leading female voice in America for nearly 25 years. The ASU College of Law was renamed for her in 2006.

A partnership with the O'Connor House Project at Papago Park, "Sandra Day O'Connor - A Citizen for All Seasons" also highlights her current plans for achieving bipartisan consensus in solving important social and political issues in Arizona. Her adobe house, where she and her husband, John, raised their three sons, has been relocated from  Paradise Valley to a site next to the museum. It will become a gathering place "where civil talk leads to civil action," according to the Arizona Historical Society.

  • Her childhood confirmation dress
  • Authentic items from the Lazy B Ranch, where she grew up
  • Personal items from the O'Connor family
