HNBA law students visit Phoenix grade school

Nine law students recently visited a Goodyear elementary school, where they gave a presentation to more than 300 fourth- to eighth-graders about the importance of setting goals and sticking to them, and doing well in reading, writing and math.
Law student Karina Ordonez, a participant in the Hispanic National Bar Association Mentoring Program, organized the Oct. 30 visit to Eliseo Felix School, which services predominantly minority students in the Avondale School District.
They opened the Law School Admission Council's new Web site,
Discoverlaw.org
, and watched a video about new U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor, which focused on her accomplishments and dedication to school as she grew up in a challenging socioeconomic environment.
Law students also explained the broad scope and essence of law as forming the rules that guide the interaction between people and things in our society. The students enjoyed learning that their hobbies are part of the legal system and understanding that any of their interests can help make a place for them in the legal field.
One Native American seventh-grader, learning that a visiting law student also was Native American, asked about the student's tribal affiliation, which demonstrated how mentors can inspire others by showing the benefits of their hard work, while sharing common origins.
"I had such a great time with these kids," said 2L Amy Owen. "I learn much more than they do, and they truly inspire me. My kids went around the room and each one told me what they wanted to be when they grow up. It was absolutely precious."
In addition to Ordonez and Owen, Tadha Ahtone, Adam Almaraz, Robin Commanda, Chris Montukwa, Joaquin Rios, Tarah White and Jamaar Williams also attended. They represented the College of Law's Black Law Students Association, Chicano/Latino Law Students Association and the Native American Law Students Association.
