Gary Birnbaum, Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Program Development, has been named "Lawyer of the Year" by Best Lawyers, along with three other College of Law adjuncts and three alumni in the Phoenix area.

 

Birnbaum, managing director of Mariscal, Weeks, McIntyre & Friedlander, P.A., was named for alternative dispute resolution; Grady Gammage Jr., of Gammage & Burnham, for land use and zoning law, and Michael J. Holden, of Holden Willits Murphy P.L.C., for construction law; and William J. Maledon, of Osborn Maledon, for bet-the-company litigation.

 

Alumni David L. Lansky (Class of 1984), of Mariscal, Weeks, McIntyre & Friedlander, P.A., was selected for real estate law; Tod F. Schleier (Class of 1976), a sole practitioner, for labor and employment law, and Elliot G. Wolfe (Class of 1978), of Palumbo Wolfe, for medical malpractice law.

Birnbaum has significant experience in all aspects of commercial and real estate litigation, and has also handled business, real estate and securities transactions in various contexts. He teaches advanced courses on Private Property Rights and Advanced Topics in Business Law: Valuation of Interests in Real Estate and Closely-Held Businesses at the College of Law. He also is a faculty member and one of the founders of  ASU's transdisciplinary Master of Real Estate Development program.

 

Holden has concentrated his practice for over 23 years in the areas of commercial litigation and construction law. He is a frequent author and speaker on a wide range of construction issues, and was a contributing author to the Arizona Construction Law Practice Manual, published in 2003 by the State Bar of Arizona.

Gammage is a part-time academic, a practicing lawyer, an author, a sometime real estate developer and a former elected official. He is a senior fellow at ASU's Morrison Institute, where his work focuses on urban growth and development, quality of life, and local economic issues. He also teaches at the College of Law and at the College of Architecture and Environmental Design.

Maledon is recognized as one of the leading commercial litigation and trial attorneys in Arizona. In the 2008 edition of Chambers USA -- Leading Lawyers for Business, he was identified as one of the top five business litigation attorneys in Arizona. He has extensive experience in both federal and state courts in a wide variety of cases, including antitrust and trade regulation cases, product liability cases, insurance coverage and insurance bad faith cases, class actions, securities cases, sports cases, and various other complex commercial cases.
