The 31-year-old father, husband, brother, son and friend died unexpectedly on Friday, March 12. Joel's family held a memorial service in Lillian, Ala., on Thursday, March 18.
"Many knew him well as a loyal, driven, passionate man with a wonderful sense of humor," said Dean Paul Schiff Berman. "Anyone who knew Joel knew of his love and devotion to his children, wife, family, and friends. He will certainly be missed.
"His wife, Stephanie, an ASU student in early childhood education, and their children, Isaiah, 5, and Layla, 1, will always be a part of our community."
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to support his children's education, the details of which will be provided at the memorial service in Tempe.
