The Daily Labor Report of the Bureau of National Affairs has reported on an American Bar Association-sponsored continuing legal education program, in which Professors Evelyn Cruz and Myles V. Lynk participated.

The webcast, “The Arizona Immigration Statute: Civil Rights Implications and National Impact,” was on July 21, and also included immigration attorney Christopher V. Nugent and Kris W. Kobach, a professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law.

The article, “Arizona Immigration Law Sparks Debate by Attorneys on Effects, Constitutionality,” reported that Lynk, the panel’s moderator, pushed back against one panelist’s defense of SB 1070. Lynk suggested Arizona’s “attrition through enforcement” approach might push its illegal immigrants into neighboring states.

Cruz said the law likely will increase distrust of police among local Latino community members, and she noted reports that police already are stepping up interrogations of individuals even before the law’s effective date of July 29.
