Stanford University Press publishes Berman essay
07/30/2010
Paul Schiff Berman
A book chapter by Dean
Paul Schiff Berman
, “Conflict of Laws and the Legal Negotiation of Difference,” has been published by Stanford University Press in
Law and the Stranger,
edited by Austin Sarat.
Berman discusses law’s potentially useful role in mediating confrontations among strangers from different communities and the possibility that the doctrines of jurisdiction, choice of law, and judgment recognition could be used to help foster dialogue among multiple communities, rather than providing territorially based rules that choose one community’s norms over another’s.

Berman’s scholarship focuses on the intersection of international law, conflict of laws, cyberspace law and the cultural analysis of law. Before arriving at ASU, Berman, Foundation Professor of Law, was the Jesse Root Professor of Law at the University of Connecticut School of Law. For the 2006-07 academic year, Berman was a Visiting Professor at Princeton University in the Program in Law and Public Affairs. He has also served on the Organizing Committee of the Association for the Study of Law, Culture, and the Humanities.
