'Republic' reports on immigration conference

A national immigration conference, “The Role of the States in Immigration Policy and Enforcement,” was noted in the Oct. 9 issue of The Arizona Republic. The conference was organized to help people better understand the legal concepts and ideas at stake in SB 1070, Arizona’s controversial immigration law.

Reporter Alia Beard Rau quoted several speakers who talked about events that led to Arizona lawmakers adopting the bill, which requires local police to enforce federal immigration law, and what has transpired since.

Rick Su, a law professor at SUNY Buffalo, told the audience of about 200 that Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio used the Legislature to support his immigration-enforcement efforts. “The state is being used as a trump or veto, and there is very little discourse and discussion going on,” Su said.
