Abbott presents at international relations conference in Stockholm
recently gave two presentations at the 7th Pan-European Conference on International Relations, “Politics in Hard Times: International Relations Responses to the Financial Crisis,” hosted by the European Standing Group on International Relations in Stockholm.
Abbott was part of a roundtable discussion that examined, 10 years later, the impact and the debates surrounding a major project on the “legalization” of world politics.
Abbott also gave a presentation on a research project that he is conducting with others regarding a recent regulatory strategy by international agencies. In it, the agencies support and rely on intermediaries, often private groups, to try to influence the behavior of the ultimate targets of regulations, such as businesses and governments, rather than the usual strategy of influencing their behavior directly.
A leading scholar in international law, Abbott’s teaching and research focus on the interdisciplinary study of international law and international relations, including public and private institutions, environmental issues, development policy, global health, and international trade and economic law. He is a Willard H. Pedrick Distinguished Research Scholar, a Faculty Fellow in the College’s Center for Law, Science & Innovation, a member of the College’s Center for Law and Global Affairs Advisory Board and a Professor of Global Studies at ASU, where he co-directs the global environmental governance program.
