A plan by Dean Paul Schiff Berman to reduce the College of Law’s reliance on public funding over the next five years was reported on in the Oct. 13 issue of The National Law Journal.

In “Arizona law school striving for financial self-reliance,” reporter Karen Sloan explained the “dramatic step” being taken by Berman that would enable the law school to do long-term planning outside the ebbs and flows of state funding.

“This is my plan, but it’s in response to the clear writing on the wall, which is that this state -- and most other states -- are less committed to funding public education than they once were,” Berman said.

Sloan reported that the plan would grow the college’s entering class from the current 195 students to about 225 within five years, in addition to expansions in the Master of Laws and the Master of Legal Studies programs.

“We’re expanding the scope of legal education,” Berman said. “This is not being driven by revenue concerns, but it will have revenue implications.”
