Marcy Karin

Associate Clinical Professor Marcy Karin, Director of the Work-Life Policy Unit in the Civil Justice Clinic at the College of Law, will be a featured speaker at an event co-sponsored by her program and the New America Foundation.

“Leading by Example: Workplace Flexibility; Lessons from State and Local Government” will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 1, at the New America Foundation in Washington, D.C.

The noon event will highlight emerging state and local workplace flexibility practices about which there have been significant discussions due to the need for policies that can help families balance their work and family lives in tough economic times. Organizers of the meeting say policy-makers, rather than reinventing the wheel, should look to state and local governments for ideas.

Karin will be joined by other experts in exploring the benefits, challenges and opportunities workplace flexibility offers as state and local governments strive to be employers-of-choice, and how such flexibility policies can inform debate on Capitol Hill.

Other speakers are: Patricia Kempthorne, Founder and Executive Director of The Twiga Foundation and Martin Simon, Program Director, Workforce Development, National Governors Association. The panel will be moderated by David Gray, Director of the Workforce and Family Program at the New America Foundation.

Karin supervises and instructs student attorneys working on behalf of clients in the Civil Justice Clinic. Her research interests include workplace law, policy, and practice, civil justice and litigation, and women’s legal history. Karin is an active member of the national work-life law and policy community. She is regularly invited to speak about the role of thoughtful public policy in this area, and is listed in the Sloan Network’s Who’s Who in Work and Family.
