Mayes quoted in Tucson Weekly article on her achievements as ACC chair
01/18/2011
Kris Mayes
Kris Mayes, Faculty Director of the College of Law’s new Program on Law and Sustainability and Professor of Practice, was quoted in a recent
Tucson Weekly
article titled, “Sustainable Success.”
The Jan. 6 article by Dave Devine discusses Mayes’ accomplishments while with the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) including a renewable energy standard that requires publicly regulated utility companies to produce 15 percent of their power from renewable sources by 2025. She was also credited with an energy-efficiency standard that launched Arizona’s ranking from 29th to 18th in terms of state energy efficiency.
The renewable energy standard was the “greatest accomplishment in the history of the ACC,” said Mayes, also a Senior Sustainability Scientist at ASU’s Global Institute of Sustainability. “It marks the beginning of the end of the reliance on fossil fuels (in Arizona).”
