Dean Paul Schiff Berman was featured in the January edition of The National Jurist in an article entitled, “When public funding is no longer available” by reporter Karen Dybis.

The article focused on Berman’s decision to raise tuition and increase student enrollment after the economic downturn forced state governments to slash their higher education allocations.

The university is looking to move the school to make it more self-sufficient in terms of operating expenses, Berman said.

“That requires us to generate about $6.5 million more than we currently generate over the next five years,” Berman said. “That sounds like a lot, but the reality is that our tuition increase for next year is only $1,500, and we do not foresee any large-scale increase as part of this plan.”

Still, to combat these tuition increases, the school is boosting its financial aid to qualified students, and created the Post-Graduate Public-Interest Fellowship Program, designed to provide a stipend to students entering the public sector, the article said.

Berman is Dean and Foundation Professor of Law at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. His scholarship focuses on the intersection of international law, conflict of laws, cyberspace law, and the cultural analysis of law.
