Paul Bender

Paul Bender, Professor of Law and Dean Emeritus, was quoted in an April 25 East Valley Tribune article, “Legislation pushes gun control issues back into spotlight,” by reporter Andrew Hedlund.

The article explored recent state legislation regarding gun control, including a bill that would have allowed guns on public right-of-ways on school campuses. Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed the measure, calling it “poorly written.” In the article, Bender discussed the Second Amendment and gun regulation laws.

“The U.S. Supreme Court ... says you can have reasonable gun regulations,” Bender said. “The guns or the arms that are protected by bearing arms is not everything you could use to kill something. It is limited in some ways to arms that are traditionally used for self-protection.”

Bender teaches courses on U.S. and Arizona constitutional law. He has written extensively about constitutional law, intellectual property and Indian law, and is co-author of the two-volume casebook/treatise, Political and Civil Rights in the United States.
