James G. Hodge Jr.

James G. Hodge Jr., the ASU Lincoln Professor of Health Law and Ethics at the College of Law, has co-authored an article, “Nationalizing Health Care Reform in a Federalist System, ” recently published in the Arizona State Law Journal.

In it, Hodge chronicles state legislative and policy responses, as well as judicial responses, to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and its companion bill, the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010. He analyzes how state-based, federalism challenges may tentatively shape national health care reforms, and addresses whether states and their citizens are prepared to reconsider notions of federalism to advance population and individuals health through national reforms.

The article was co-authored by Jalayne Arias and Ron Ordell, former fellows in the Public Health Law and Policy Program, which Hodge directs at the College of Law.

Through scholarly and applied work, Hodge delves into multiple areas of public health law, global health law, ethics and human rights. Hodge teaches Health Law, Ethics, and Policy, Public Health Law and Ethics, and Global Health Law and Policy. In September 2010, he was named Director of the Public Health Law Network - Western Region. He is a Faculty Fellow in the law school’s Center for Law, Science & Innovation, and an affiliate faculty member in the Global Health Program in ASU’s School of Human Evolution & Social Change.
