Carissa Byrne Hessick, Associate Professor of Law, was quoted recently in an article titled "Judges Consider New Factor at Sentencing: Military Service" in The Wall Street Journal.

The article, by reporter Amir Efrati, explores the idea that a growing number of judges say U.S. military veterans should be treated differently from non-veterans when they are sentenced for crimes.

In the article, Hessick points out that taking military service into account at sentencing isn't a new tradition, and that in the Civil War era, members of the military were routinely shown leniency by judges.
