Professor Gary Marchant was interviewed recently by Fox 10 about the dangers of certain prescription drugs that have received so-called "black box" warnings from the federal government.
According to the American Medical Association, each year more than 2 million people end up in the hospital after having bad reactions to medication. Allie Rasmussen of Fox 10 reported that the FDA requires some of them, such as anti-depressants and drugs used to treat Attention Deficit Disorder and asthma, to be flagged in the Physicians' Desk Reference.
"The black box drugs are the worst of the worst," said Marchant, executive director of the College's Center for the Study of Law, Science, & Technology. "They are the really serious ones that we want doctors to think about before prescribing."
It's up to doctors to warn their patients, but patients also share the responsibility of asking if there are cheaper, safer alternatives to the ones being prescribed.
"The whole way we look at this is, `Are the benefits of the drug greater than the risks?'" Marchant said.
