Professor Gary Marchant recently talked about the legal issues facing doctors due to advancements in genetic testing with amednews.com, the American Medical Association's newspaper.
Marchant, executive director of the College of Law's Center for the Study of Law, Science, & Technology, told reporter Amy Lynn Sorrel that pharmacogenomics could pose legal concerns for physicians. Pharmacogenomics is a science that examines the inherited variations in human genes that dictate drug response and explores how these variations can predict a patient's reaction to drugs.
The FDA recently allowed manufacturers of the blood thinner Coumadin to advise physicians that genetic testing may help with dosing and reduce known complications from the drug. Marchant said patients harmed by the drug could sue their doctors for failing to order such tests before prescribing.
