Kittrie addresses Georgetown conference
Orde Kittrie
Orde F. Kittrie
, Professor of Law, served as the luncheon speaker at a Georgetown University conference on innovative legal mechanisms for promoting nonproliferation on Friday, Sept. 26.
The conference was organized by the Georgetown University Institute for International Law and Politics and the Monterey Institute of International Studies.
Kittrie discussed various ways in which law is being used by U.S. national, state and local officials to increase leverage over Iran's nuclear weapons program, with the goal of peacefully discouraging Iran from proceeding with prohibited activities, in the absence of strong U.N. Security Council sanctions.
These legal tools include increasing state and local divestment of pensions from foreign companies doing business with Iran, sanctions and other pressures on foreign banks doing business with Iran, and use of the Iran Sanctions Act and other federal legal tools applicable to Iran's energy sector, Kittrie said.
