Clinical Professor Art Hinshaw was the keynote speaker at the Arizona School Boards Association (ASBA) Summer Leadership Institute on Friday, Aug. 1, in Flagstaff. His address, “Rethinking Conflict: What’s Really at Stake?”, focused on the various systems at play in conflict situations.
“My goal was to give them a way to see conflict differently so they can focus on the important issues at stake without getting caught up in the distractions that conflict situations often present,” said Hinshaw, Director of the Lodestar Dispute Resolution Program at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law.
He also conducted a workshop at the conference, Responding to Conflict Constructively, which focused on improving participants’ skills in difficult conversations.
The conference, called Courageous Conversations, was a part of Project Civil Discourse (http://www.azhumanities.org/pcd1/index.html), a statewide effort to share, model and provide insight on collaborative problem-solving techniques to enhance and improve public dialogue and discussion about the important issues that affect Arizona. ASBA and the Lodestar Dispute Resolution Program are partners in the project.
