Marchant lectures at Chautauqua Institution
Gary Marchant
Professor Gary Marchant of the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law is participating in the 2008 Chautauqua Institution lecture series on July 14-16, a week dedicated to the topic, "The Ethical Frontiers of Science."
Marchant, executive director of the College's Center for the Study of Law, Science, & Technology and professor of Emerging Technologies, Law & Ethics at the Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics at Arizona State University, will be on a panel with two other Lincoln Center faculty members. They are Braden Allenby, Lincoln professor of engineering and ethics, and Joseph Herkert, Lincoln professor of ethics and technology.
The event, held each summer in Chautauqua, N.Y., is billed as a "festival for mind, body and spirit," and offers lectures on everything from American foreign policy and faith in public life to food and sports. Opera, theater, pop concerts and the symphony also are included.
Marchant's presentation, "The World You Know is Obsolete: The Disruptive Impact of Emerging Technologies," focuses on genetic, biotech, nanotechnology and brain scanning technologies, as well as privacy issues raised by them. Herkert and Allenby are speaking about topics such as virtual reality, robotics and transhumanism.
They will give overviews on the technologies, and provide scenarios about what's happening today, in addition to projections about developments in the near future.
