of the Clinical Program
Jennifer Barnes, director of the Clinical Program at the College of Law, has been elected co-president of a Phoenix organization that promotes equal access to justice for all people.
Barnes, an attorney who also is director of the College's Civil Justice Clinic, and Thomas W. Jones, a lawyer in the La Paz County Attorney's Office in Parker, will serve a one-year term as co-presidents of Community Legal Services (CLS) in Phoenix. Barnes and Jones, who served the past year together as co-vice presidents, were elected by the CLS Board of Directors on May 14.
CLS is a not-for-profit Arizona law firm that was incorporated in 1952 to promote "equal access to justice for all." Its mission is to eliminate poverty-based inequities in the civil justice system by providing high-quality legal advice, advocacy and assistance to low-income Arizonans on a variety of civil matters.
That mission is one in which Barnes, a 1987 alumna of the College of Law, strongly believes.
"I feel incredibly privileged to serve an organization that is as compassionate and generous as Community Legal Services," she said. "Its lawyers and staff are dedicated to providing representation to others who cannot afford it otherwise, and I'm proud to be a part of its mission."
Barnes also was selected recently as one of the Top 50 Pro Bono Attorneys in Arizona, an award given annually by the Arizona Foundation for Legal Services & Education.
She is the fourth person with ties to the College of Law to lead CLS; the others are Professor Bob Bartels, Michael Donovan, a Yuma attorney who graduated in 1973, and Chandler attorney William Spence, a 1970 alumnus.
