Bender, C. Hessick, discuss SB 1070 on ‘Horizon’

Professors Paul Bender and Carissa Hessick recently appeared on Eight’s Horizon, discussing the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on SB 1070. Regina Jefferies, chair of the Arizona chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, also appeared on the panel to give a legal analysis of the ruling.

Bender teaches courses on U.S. and Arizona constitutional law. He has written extensively about constitutional law, intellectual property and Indian law, and is coauthor of the two-volume casebook/treatise, Political and Civil Rights in the United States. Bender has argued more than 20 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, and actively participates in constitutional litigation in federal and state courts.

Hessick teaches Criminal Procedure, Criminal Law, and Federal Crimes. Her research focuses on aggravation and mitigation in criminal sentencing, the criminalization and punishment associated with child pornography, and other political and doctrinal issues associated with sentencing. She recently published an article in the California Law Review on the constitutionality of common sentencing factors. She has also published articles on whether military service and other good works ought to be treated as mitigating sentencing factors and on the severity of sentences associated with the possession of child pornography.
