James Alling, a second-year law student, helped the ASU synthetic biology team that recently was awarded a gold medal at the 2012 International Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) Americas West Regional Jamboree at Stanford University.

The October medal meant the team was invited to the World Jamboree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in November.

Alling, a bioengineering doctoral student and also a 2L at the College of Law, was one of five advisors to the team who helped coach them to victory at Stanford.

“It was amazing how far we got in the competition, considering this was only the second year ASU has had an iGEM team,” said team member Abhinav Markus.
