Patty Ferguson-Bohnee, faculty director of the Indian Legal Clinic at the College of Law, was quoted in an article written by Mary Shinn for Cronkite News on Tuesday, Feb. 26.

The article, “Arizona officials keep close eye as voting rights case goes to Supreme Court,” explores a challenge to a federal voting-rights law that will be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court.

A county in Alabama is challenging the constitutionality of one part of the 1965 Voting Rights Act that requires certain states with a history of discrimination – including Arizona – to have any change to voting laws approved by the Justice Department.

Ferguson-Bohnee told Cronkite News she opposes the challenge, and the federal review is needed. She credited the federal reviews for encouraging equality throughout the state.
