SB 1070 wrap in 'Republic' includes remarks by C. Hessick
07/12/2012
Carissa Byrne Hessick
A question-and-answer column in
The Arizona Republic
, published days after the U.S. Supreme Court’s June 25 ruling that upheld a key part of the controversial Arizona immigration-enforcement law, featured insight from Professor
Carissa Byrne Hessick
.
In “SB 1070 experts address questions,” by reporter Alia Beard Rau, Hessick joined three other legal experts in clearing up some of the confusion about Section 2B in the law. It requires an officer to make an attempt, when possible, to determine the immigration status of a person stopped, detained or arrested if there is reasonable suspicion that person is in the country illegally, Rau reported.
Hessick noted that 2B doesn’t change what officers already can do; rather, it requires officers to investigate an individual’s immigration status under certain circumstances.
