College of Law hosts annual Mock Trial Academy for high school and middle school students
02/20/2013
More than 90 students from Case Grande and Phoenix met at the College of Law on Saturday, Jan. 12, for an introduction to
discoverlaw.org
, a website that promotes diversity among law schools and the legal profession, and to attend three workshops on mock trial techniques. The sessions were taught by law professors, alumni and others in the legal community.
Attorneys Sarah Barrios and James Cool, alumni of the College of Law, taught a segment on opening and closing statements, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Frederick Battista and 1L Chris Doran presented a workshop on direct and cross examination. Additionally, a workshop on evidence and expert witnesses was presented by Associate Clinical Professor Kimberly Holst and David Jackson, a College of Law alumnus.
The middle school students also listened to a panel on higher education and careers, featuring, among others, Jackson, attorney Jamaar Williams, also a law school alum, 2L Mackenzie Woods and law alumna Marisol Diaz, former Director of Admissions and Student Groups at the College of Law. The students also met with attorneys and student mentors from the Phoenix chapter of the Hispanic National Bar Association mentoring program.
The event was sponsored by the Law School Admission Council and the Hispanic National Bar Association.
