Esquer quoted in the 'Phoenix Business Journal'

Andrea Esquer, the Assistant Director of the Homeowner Advocacy Unit, was recently quoted in the Phoenix Business Journal in an article titled, “Arizona AG: Bank of America blocking state’s investigation.” It reported on Bank of America’s alleged interference with the state of Arizona’s investigation of the bank’s loan modification practices.

In the Feb. 3 article, Esquer said she had not heard from any homeowners who were asked to agree to confidentiality or nondisparagement clauses in the context of a settlement with BofA.

“We are deeply concerned, however, about any potential impact of such clauses on the ability of public agencies to investigate allegations of wrongdoing,” Esquer said.

She also said that she hopes lenders such as BofA will cooperate by allowing the public access to information about how mortgage disputes are being settled.

Esquer is the Assistant Director of the Homeowner Advocacy Unit, housed in The Civil Justice Clinic, in which student attorneys represent families facing wrongful foreclosure or victims of mortgage fraud scams and engage in policy work, advocacy and community outreach on housing law and related issues. She has experience in both the executive branch of the State of Arizona, where she was press secretary for former Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard, working with the management team on media relations involving complex legal issues, and in the federal government
