Gary Marchant

ASU Regents’ Professor Gary Marchant is speaking at the 2012 Annual Conference of Judges, Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 5-6, in Bloomington, Minn.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Framing the Future,” and speakers are presentating on topics such as China’s effect on the global economy, social media in courtrooms, new surveillance technology and the changing rules of privacy.

Marchant’s first presentation is titled “Emerging Technologies and the Future of Law,” and will explore how recent technologies—which include genetics, nanotechnology, neuroscience, information/surveillance technologies and virtual reality—have quickly moved from science fiction to real companies, real products and real lawsuits. His second presentation is titled “New Surveillance Technologies and the Changing Face of Privacy,” and will address how new technologies are challenging traditional Fourth Amendment privacy frameworks and determinations of “reasonable expectations” of privacy.

Marchant is the ASU Lincoln Professor of Emerging Technologies, Law and Ethics at the College of Law, and faculty director of the Center for Law, Science & Innovation. He frequently lectures about the intersection of law and science at national and international conferences. He has authored more than 60 articles and book chapters on various issues relating to emerging technologies.
