Patty Ferguson-Bohnee

Patty Ferguson-Bohnee, faculty director of the Indian Legal Clinic at the College of Law, was mentioned in an article written by Aura Bogado of Colorlines on Jan. 28.

The article, titled “How Native Voters Are Routinely Disenfranchised in Arizona,” explores the plight of many of the state’s native voters such as Agnes Laughter, an 80-year-old grandmother who was denied her right to cast a ballot in 2006 because she had no identification other than her thumbprint.

Ferguson-Bohnee represented Laughter in a lawsuit, which resulted in a settlement that included expanding the kinds of identification that Natives in Arizona could use to vote.

This year, the Indian Legal Clinic is heading Arizona’s Native Vote Election Protection Program, and expects several more complaints like Laughter’s.

Ferguson-Bohnee has assisted in complex voting rights litigation, and she has drafted state legislative and congressional testimony on behalf of tribes with respect to voting rights’ issues.
