Participants in an upcoming Cave Creek bull run have few, if any, people to legally blame but themselves if injury comes their way, Professor Betsy Grey told The New York Times in an article published on Oct. 5.

Contestants in the Oct. 14-16 event must sign a seven-page liability waiver before lacing up their sneakers, or whatever bull runners wear on their feet, and being chased by 1,500-pound rodeo bulls through the streets of the Western-style town north of Phoenix.

Although waivers are never totally ironclad, Grey told reporter Marc Lacey, a runner would have difficulty winning a lawsuit in the eventuality of a bull run gone wrong.

“Some people see this as romantic and Hemingway-esque,” said Grey, a tort-law expert and the Alan A. Matheson Fellow at the College of Law. “I think it’s insane.”
