Charles Calleros

A new book by Charles Calleros, professor for the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, is an innovative outreach to lowering the cost of casebooks for law students.

Contracts: Cases, Text and Problems, published by Carolina Academic Press, is an electronic textbook, the product of a joint effort by Calleros and the publisher to offer the book at a more affordable price to students. The book is available for download in a pdf version, for use on laptops, or in an e-book version suitable for reading and marking on an iPad or Kindle. It is priced at $20 for either version, or $25 for both. Students can also purchase as hard copy in binder form at the law school copy center for the cost of photocopying.

The book is intended as an “open-source” book, allowing other professors to update and tailor the book to their specific course needs. This calls for professors to be “co-authors” to the book by revising, adding and replacing material as dictated by their own teaching styles.

The 509-page book is designed for Calleros’ four-unit contracts course, which primarily explores common law legal method, as well as statutory analysis through study of selected provisions of the Uniform Commercial Code.

Calleros’ research interests include the intersection of race and gender discrimination and free speech, various issues regarding legal education, and international and comparative contract law. At ASU, he teaches Contracts, International Contracts, Civil Rights Legislation, and Legal Method and Writing. At the Universite Paris Descartes, he annually teaches short courses in Common Law Legal Method, Comparative and International Contracts, and International Conflict of Laws.
