Orde Kittrie

Professor Orde F. Kittrie was a guest speaker at Columbia University School of Law on Aug. 3, as part of the Tikvah-Hertog Summer Institute on Law and National Security. The Summer Institute was led by Columbia University law professor Philip Bobbitt, Harvard University law professor Jack Goldsmith, New York University law professor Samuel Rascoff, and Harvard University law professor Gabriella Blum. Other guest speakers included former CIA director Michael Hayden, current National Security Council Senior Director for the Middle East Steven Simon, and former Deputy National Security Advisor Juan Zarate.

Kittrie’s remarks were titled “Lawfare and U.S. National Security.” In his remarks, Kittrie provided an introduction to the concept of lawfare and discussed how the U.S. could more effectively use lawfare as a tool for promoting U.S. national security. Kittrie’s remarks drew from his scholarly article, Lawfare and U.S. National Security, 43 CASE W. RES. J. INT’L L. 393-421 (2011), available online at SSRN.

Kittrie is a leading expert on nonproliferation legal issues and sanctions. He currently serves as chair of the Nonproliferation, Arms Control & Disarmament Interest Group of the American Society of International Law and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He has testified on nonproliferation issues before both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives and recently served as one of 12 members of a special Congressionally created committee to make recommendations on how to better prevent the proliferation of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. Prior to joining the law faculty, Kittrie served for 11 years in the U.S. State Department, including as the lead attorney for nuclear affairs.
