The Center for the Study of Law, Science, & Technology announces the following lectures for 2009-2010. Check back often for additional events and details.

Steve Lockard, President and CEO of TPI Composites Inc., a Scottsdale-based company that designs and manufactures large-scale composite structures such as hybrid electric buses, 90-foot wind blades and components for U.S. military vehicles. Tuesday, Sept. 15, Law and Science Student Association.

Gregory N. Mandel, Professor at Temple Law School, where he specializes in intellectual property law and the interface among technology, science and the law, with a particular focus on patent, biotechnology and nanotechnology law. His experimental studies have been cited in several briefs filed with the United States Supreme Court. Monday, Oct. 5, Center Speaker.

Robert B. Laughlin, Professor of Physics at Stanford University, will deliver the annual Hogan and Hartson Jurimetrics Lecture in honor of the late Lee Loevinger, a longtime friend of the College of Law and member of the Center's advisory board. Laughlin received the Nobel Prize for physics in 1998, with two other U.S. physicists, for their discoveries of how ordinary electrons interact to make the universe work the way it does. Thursday, Nov. 5, The Great Hall.

Sara Bronin, Associate Professor of Law and the coordinator of the Gallivan Conferences in real property law at the University of Connecticut School of Law. Bronin has researched and published in the area of property, land use and historic preservation law, and among her areas of interest are green building issues. Monday, Nov. 9, Center Speaker; Tuesday, Nov. 10, Law and Science Student Association.

Jon Merz , Associate Professor and Associate Chair for Faculty Affairs in the Department of Medical Ethics in the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Senior Fellow in the University's Center for Bioethics, and an Associate Scholar in the University's Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Merz's areas of interest are research ethics, privacy and confidentiality, genetics, informed consent, gene patenting, and reproductive rights. Stem cell policy may see US cos seeking tie-ups in India

President Barack Obama's support of embryonic stem cell research could spur more partnerships between U.S. companies and research organizations in India, said experts in such studies. "Many companies are eyeing India because of its huge population base and genetic versatility," said Karan Goel, Stem Cell Global Foundation's founder and chairman.

Hospital to Collect Patients' Genomic Data

Brigham and Women's Hospital intends to collect and analyze blood specimens from willing patients, generating information that will then be evaluated together with clinical details from the Boston facility's electronic medical records system. The initiative could become a model for how genomic data could be used in personalized medicine and computerized health records.

U.S. lawmakers tussle over generic biologic drugs

U.S. lawmakers tussled on Thursday over how long makers of biotechnology drugs should have an exclusive license for the expensive medicines in a hearing called to discuss a Federal Trade Commission report on the issue.
