Spyware Prevention

It's everywhere and hard to get rid of. You may not even know you're infected until it's too late.

What can you do to prevent it?

  • Security updates!
    • Make sure your Operating system has all the security updates available. Windows Update is the little yellow shield in your task tray.
    • Virus protection updates. A virus scanner with an old database is useless. Variants of viruses and spyware come out daily. You must update accordingly.
    • Internet Browser version. Older versions of browsers(ie: Firefox / Internet explorer) are prone to bugs. Updating to a newer version will help close those loop holes.

  • Virus Protection

Virus protection is absolutely needed! Spyware uses viruses to grow, infiltrate, steal, and ruin files on your computer.

ASU no longer provides virus protection for free. Here are our recommendations.

  • Spyware Protection

Spyware hides in many places and is constantly changing. Using a spyware removal program with an current database is the only way to remove all of it's pieces.

Removal generally cannot be done with just one application. There are so many variations of spyware that one program may not catch it while another can.

Here are the anti spyware programs we recommend to be used together.

  • Questionable Software

Free software and file sharing networks are known to carry spyware and viruses. Be aware of what you are installing. It's common for file sharing networks to have spyware renamed as a popular download. They will also include the spyware as part of the free software usually portrayed as a useful toolbar.

Here are common programs we have seen include spyware

  • LimeWire
  • BearShare
  • Torrents (in general)
  • Browser Toolbars
  • Custom icon/emoticon/cursors

  • Websites

Websites are becoming the favorite method of deploying spyware. They can be a whole website, pop up, or just a little ad on a page.

Adult content sites generally cannot lure many advertisement sponsors so they reach out to who ever is willing to put ads on their site. Spyware companies go hand in hand with these type of ads.

Searching for keywords can also send you to malicious sites. According to Mcafee here are the 50 most dangerous search words as of July 2009. As you can see, they will change with trends.
