This program is designed for prospective students interested in expanding the skills and expertise they offer to their employers or those that wish to transition to a career focused on patent law, often by sitting for the patent bar exam to become a patent agent. The skills and expertise gained as a student in the program are in demand from law firms, corporations, and entrepreneurial ventures.
In an innovation economy, people that understand the technology and science behind new inventions while also having the skills and expertise to protect those inventions for commercialization will be valuable across many markets and sectors.
The curriculum of the program covers critical issues in patent law and practice along with related topics important to a successful patent practice. The program can be completed in one year (12 months) as a full time student. Part-time students have up to three years to meet the degree requirements.
Many of the MLS-Patent Practice degree program's courses are the same courses offered to the Juris Doctor ("JD") students attending the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law in hopes of practicing law in the future. The MLS-Patent Practice courses are not separate, secondary courses. MLS-Patent Practice students will be in the same classrooms as their JD counterparts.
The admissions process for the MLS-Patent Practice is the same as the general Master of Legal Studies. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2013-2014 academic year and the application deadlines and priority dates are the same as the general MLS.
Tuition for the MLS-Patent Practice is calculated based on the tuition for the general Master of Legal Studies degree. Using the tuition model for the 2012-2013 academic year, full time resident tuition for the MLS-Patent Practice would be $38,000 and full time non-resident tuition would be $46,800. Part-time tuition will depend on how many credit hours are taken each semester, so tuition will be unique to each part time student's particular circumstances. Generally, a part time student can expect tuition to be more than their full time classmates. Please contact us for more details regarding tuition.
