It is common, especially with out-of-state law students, that in an academic year a student will receive the maximum amount of Federal Direct Stafford Loans of $18,500, and possibly a scholarship as well, but still have room to borrow additional money under his or her Cost of Attendance.

According to federal guidelines, these students are able to apply to a private lender to borrow the difference between their Cost of Attendance and their total allotment of financial aid from Federal Direct Stafford Loans, scholarships, and so on.

ASU preferred lenders offers students some of the lowest loan rates for alternative loans. Click on http://http://www.asu.edu/fa/loans/alt  to apply for an alternative loan with an ASU preferred lender.  You'll find a list of eligibility requirements and all the information needed to complete the entire application on-line.

If you prefer to apply for an alternative loan with a different lender, contact that lender directly.

Students who have completed an application with a private lender will need their application certified by ASU. Please return completed and signed applications to Student Financial Assistance Office, Students Services Building, 2nd Floor.
