Fifteen 1L students are invited to join based on class rank, as calculated by the Registrar after the Spring semester. The Editor-in-Chief will invite the first 15 students in order of rank. If a student declines the invitation, an invitation will be extended to the next ranked student. In the event of a tie, the Editor-in-Chief will break the tie by averaging the candidates' first and second semester Legal Writing grades. Following the tie-breaker, the Editor-in-Chief will extend an invitation to each remaining candidate with the highest Legal Writing average, until the total number of invitees equals 15. If a tie remains after the initial tie-breaker and the Editor-in-Chief is unable to identify the top 15 candidates, the candidates involved in the tie will be issued invitations based on their performance in the Write-On Competition and will not benefit from this section.
As grades for the Spring semester will likely not be finalized by the time of the Write-On Competition, all students who seek membership are encouraged to participate in the Write-On Competition.
