Using HeinOnline

HeinOnline provides full-text page-image (PDF) format access to law reviews and journals; historical volumes of federal documents like the Federal Register; classic legal texts from the 17th through early 20th centuries; U.S. treaties; Supreme Court cases as they appear in U.S. Reports; and Attorney General opinions. HeinOnline's Law Journal Library offers access to pre-1980 legal-periodical scholarship that is not available on LexisNexis or Westlaw as well as recent volumes.


 

How to Find HeinOnline from the ASU Law Library Homepage

  • Start from the Law Library home page and click on the Legal Research tab. 
  • Under Recommended Resources, click on the dropdown menu.
  • Click on HeinOnline.
  • On the next screen, click on the underlined link for HeinOnline.

How to Select a Library

To select a library, click on the Library name. When you select a Library, the appropriate search pages/templates will display. They vary according to the materials in the Library. The rest of this brochure will focus on searching in the Law Journal Library since it is the most frequently used Library.

 

How to Find a Source by Title

  • Title Lookup: At the top of the Welcome page is the Title Lookup box.
  • If you know the full or partial title of a source enter that into the Title Lookup box. To search for a phrase, type the phrase words in quotation marks.

How to Find Articles in the Law Journal Library by Citation

  • From the Welcome page, click on Law Journal Library.
  • Click on the Citation Navigator tab on the toolbar at the top of the page.
  • Citation Navigator: This feature allows you to find articles by a citation three ways: using the Bluebook citation, by typing or copying and pasting a citation, or by entering information for non-consecutively paginated volumes.
  • Click on Get Citation. The article will appear in the right portion of the screen.

How to Find Articles in the Law Journal Library by Browsing

  • From the Welcome page, click on Law Journal Library.
  • Browse by Journal: An alphabetical list of the available titles is displayed in the right portion of the screen. Click on a title to display the available volumes.
  • Click on a volume number.
  • Click on the Table of Contents tab on the toolbar at the top of the page to view its table of contents.
  • Click on the page number to display the article.

How to Find Articles in the Law Journal Library by Author or Title

  • From the Welcome page, click on Law Journal Library.
  • Click on the Search tab located on the toolbar at the top of the page.
  • Click on Field Search.
  • Click on the pull-down menu and choose a field to search: Creator/Author or Title.
  • Enter keywords from the title of the article or the author's name (order of first and last name is not important) into the Field Search for box.
  • You can limit the search by year or journal title.
  • Click on the Search button.

How to Find Articles in the Law Journal Library on a Subject

  • From the Welcome page, click on Law Journal Library.
  • Click on the Search tab located on the toolbar at the top of the page.
  • Search: Enter keywords in the Search box. Use terms that relate to the important issues and facts involved in your research. Do not use common words like “law”. Think of unique terms or phrases that describe your topic.
  • Click on Word or Phrase Search button.
  • Click on the magnifying glass.
  • Advanced Search: Click on Advanced Search. Enter keywords in the “Search For” box on the right. You can limit your search by year or to a specific journal title.
  • On the right, you can select specific sections to be searched if you want to limit results to articles, notes, comments, reviews, etc.
  • Click on the Search button.

How to View Results

  • Search results will display in either a list format or a single document display. To view a document from the list format, click on the article citation. The article will display in page-image (PDF) format.
  • To view where your search terms appear in the document, click on View Matching Text Pages. The article pages that have your search terms will display in text format.
  • Once a volume or article is selected and a page is displayed, a navigation toolbar appears above the text:
    • Citations on this Page: Click on this link to display a list of the citations found on the page being viewed. Any citations that are available in HeinOnline are linked from the list.
    • View Text/View Image: Alternate between viewing document in text or page-image (PDF) format.
    • Citation: Display the citation of the current page view. Includes volume, journal, page number and title/author of the current section.
    • Pages: Move from page to page within a document using the arrows or the drop-down menu.
    • Rotate Image: These symbols rotate left rotate right rotate the image 90° left and 90° right respectively.
    • Smaller Image/Larger Image: The magnifying glass symbols control the size of the displayed image.
    • Toggle Full-Screen full-screen display This symbol hides the top menu bar and the left-hand table of contents column allowing you to view more of the current screen. Clicking the symbol again returns the screen to normal.
    • Permanent Link permanent link This button displays a stable link that can be used from any ASU computer or from any computer with ASUrite ID and password. After clicking this button, the link can be copied from the browser address bar.

How to Print Results


Printing in the Law Library requires the creation of a print account.  Please see the Printing and Copying Page for instructions on setting up a print account and printer locations.
  • Click on the Print/Download icon Print/Download icon in the upper right corner of the document you want to print. A new window will open showing Print/Download options.
  • To print the document you are viewing, click on the top PDF link under the phrase DOWNLOAD TO PDF.
  • To print the individual page you are viewing, click on the bottom PDF link under the phrase DOWNLOAD TO PDF.
  • Your document will open in PDF. On the toolbar at the top of the PDF document, click the Print icon PDF print icon.
  • On the next screen click on the Print button.
  • Enter the User ID from the back of your Print Anywhere card when prompted to do so.

How to Download Results

  • Click on the Print/Download icon Print/Download icon in the upper right corner of the document you want to download. A new window will open showing Print/Download options.
    • To download the document you are viewing, click on the top PDF link under the phrase DOWNLOAD TO PDF.
    • To download the individual page you are viewing, click on the bottom PDF link under the phrase DOWNLOAD TO PDF.
  • Your document will open in PDF. On the toolbar at the top of the PDF document, click the Save icon PDF save icon.
  • Connect your Flash drive to the USB cable marked with a white label.
  • In the Save As screen, select a File Name that begins with E:\ (for example, E:\document name).
  • Click the Save button.
