02/27/2012
Evelyn Cruz
Clinical Professor
Evelyn Cruz
, Director of the Immigration Law & Policy Clinic, recently was quoted in an
Arizona Republic
article, titled “Babeu may face new legal question over ex’s volunteer work.”
The Feb. 24 article reported that Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu may have aided the violation of federal immigration laws by allowing his ex-boyfriend, a Mexican national, to work on his campaign as a volunteer. Babeu also my have illegally accepted a campaign donation from him, according to the report.
“He possibly facilitated someone violating his visa,” Cruz said.
She said federal law prohibits employers from knowingly hiring unauthorized foreign workers. But Babeu would not have violated the federal employer-sanctions law if he did not pay Orozco any money or remuneration such as housing or services, the
Republic
reported.
