Andrew Hurwitz

President Barack Obama has nominated Arizona Supreme Court Vice Chief Andrew Hurwitz, a longtime adjunct professor, for a seat on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Obama said Hurwitz is “not only a first rate legal mind, but a faithful public servant.” Hurwitz’s nomination will have to be approved by the Senate before he can serve.

Hurwitz has taught for the College of Law for more than three decades. Prior to joining the Court, he practiced law at Osborn Maledon, P.A., primarily in appellate, government and commercial litigation and government affairs.
“Andy Hurwitz is one of the premier jurists of our time, a longtime friend of the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law and a treasured adjunct professor whose wisdom has benefited hundreds of our law students,” said Douglas Sylvester, interim dean of the law school, in a prepared statement. “While we will miss his dynamic presence in the classroom, we congratulate him on the nomination and wish him all the best.”
Hurwitz's service to the state includes Judge Pro Tempore on the Arizona Court of Appeals, as a member and then president of the Arizona Board of Regents, and as chief of staff to two former governors, Bruce Babbitt and Rose Mofford. He is a member of the American Law Institute and a Master in the Horace Rumpole Inn of Court.
