Sarah Buel

Professor Sarah Buel was quoted in an article, titled “We need to ask the right questions,” on coloradoan.com, a site of the Gannett Company, about how to deal with victims of violence who do not want to report the abuse.

Phrases appealing to the well being of the victim and their family are effective, Buel said in the Oct. 27 article. “I’m afraid for you. I’m afraid for your children. Things generally only get worse. You don’t deserve to be treated this way. And I’m here for you whenever you need me,” are statements worth trying, said Buel, a domestic violence expert.

Sarah Buel, who NBC has called one of the five most inspiring women in America, is the faculty director of the Diane Halle Center for Family Justice. She is a survivor of domestic violence herself and has worked for more than 30 years with battered women and children. She graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School, where she founded the Harvard Battered Women’s Advocacy Project, the Harvard Women in Prison Project, and the Harvard Children and Family Rights Project. Buel taught at the University of Texas School of Law, where she founded and co-directed their Domestic Violence Clinic and the University of Texas Institute on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.
